First off this is a visual site unless you intend to dig for fossils. This is an old Iron ore mine. When I was a child I would take the tours into the lower parts of the pit which are now covered by about 80 feet of water. I remember taking a school field trip there to look for fossils in a a stock pile. I did not personally find any, but a class mate found a rather large vertebrae from a whale, shark, or some other animal. As an adult I still frequent the area to look for "lake Superior Agates." I am unaware of any gold, but have panned flour gold about 40 miles north of the old mine.
