    Hello
I will be planning a trip in the later part of May to go to North Carolina and looking for the local chapters to help find some good locations. I am a member of the Fredrick Maryland chapter. I have a lot of questions as this will be my first trip down there, so let me just jump right in. We will be using a mini high banker and would like to know if this is allowed? Where to stay while down there? Where are the gpaa claims at as I have not received my book yet? In order to go to the gpaa claims what my I bring with me? Do I have to join the local chapter to use the claims? And last is there anyone who is experienced that may want to show a greenhorn the rope while down there? The dates for the trip are May 22 through the 24. I am a early riser and a late worker just looking to have a great time.

Hello Charles, Unfortunately in an area steeped in gold mining and gold history, there are no GPAA claims.

Everything listed in the mining guide in NC is a pay to dig site like the Lucky Strike Mine, Thermal City Gold Mine, Vein Mtn Gold and Emerald Mine, just to mention a few. Most of these do offer a 10% discount to GPAA/LDMA members.

Contact the local chapters, like you are planning, as they may have local areas or claims they have access to. There are 3 chapters in NC, they are listed in the community and chapters section.

As far as what you can bring to GPAA claims, besides your member cards and mining guide, it all depends on the claim. When you get your guide, each claim will have displayed at the top of the page what type of mining equipment is allowed on the claim.

And no if you go to a claim you don't have to be a member of any chapter, unless owned or established by a local chapter, GPAA claims are not chapter specific.

    I hope this helps.

Also the LDMA has a community dig at the Vein Mtn Camp in NC the first week of June,  GPAA members can pay to join in on the fun for a 3 or 5 day period, which includes a split of the gold done by draws at the end of the dig.  You can contact the office for more details.  It should also explain the digs in the mining guide.

Thanks for the advice it is much needed. I have a few more questions that have come up. Does the LDMA have a claim in North Carolina? If so is it all year and any special cost that goes with it. Besides the membership cost.
    Thanks Chuck

Hey Chuck, Yes the LDMA has a camp in the area of the Lucky Strike Mine and Thermal City Mine. (LDMA camps are owned by the LDMA and are not just claims). It is open to LDMA members 24/7. There are 3 LDMA camps in the SE, Vein Mtn in NC, Loud Mine in GA, and the Oconee Camp in SC.

The only thing you pay for after joining the LDMA is camping, it is usually $3.25 a night for full hook ups,( there are only about a dozen at Vein Mtn camp) and $1 a night for primitive camping, (these fees help pay for the water and power needed for the bath houses, hook ups and other facilities). They also have monthly rates as you can stay at most LDMA camps for up to 6 months at a time.
Other camps have more hookups. There are over 100 at Loud Mine in GA. The Oconee camp is a primitive camp, there are no hook ups or facilities.

The only other time an LDMA member needs to pay, is to attend one of the group digs, but it is a discounted price from what GPAA members would pay to attend. Usually your first dig is free after joining/upgrading to the LDMA, and you can attend as many as you want to pay for, (GPAA members can only do 1 group dig per year).

    Hope this helps.
