Hey guys! iv been gold panning once years ago and off and on since but for the past year I have just been testing pans at home and working on my technique and am wanting to go to auburn state recreation to scope out a place I found through research. from what I found so far they only allow hand and pan in their area.. So here are my questions.

I'm planning on going alone to explore is that a big deal?

I'm planning on packing light. just a backpack with basic panning tools (pan scoop spoon crevice tools etc.) and of course my GPAA book and card.
    Anything in particular recommended?

Possibly bringing a metal detector. worth it or no?

Also, off topic, as far as our claims show for coordinates are there designated physical "perimeter " markers at our claims to show how far we can go legally?

example (correct me if I'm wrong) : if a claim is 160 acres is that 40 acres N,E,S & W from center coordinates? How is that explained in a square grid? its confusing to me. Yes super greenhorn moment haha. Anything will help I'm just not understanding from the research iv done.

Hi, Jason. I would also pack a couple of vials. I usually take a sandwich and I use the plastic baggie afterward to take home some samples of dirt or rocks. Definitely take a metal detector and/or a pin-pointer.

    Jason,

    Welcome,
Sounds like you have done some research on Auburn State Rec.
Be sure to know their rules, different than other places
Wont need your GPAA book, ASR is not affiliated with GPAA.
There are GPAA claims in the area, check them out
Good little mining shop in Auburn, hope it;s still there
There are spots off of Yankee Jim Rd, Shirt tail creek, dont know status of claims in the area
Iowa Hill Rd, Penny weight trail might be worth looking at, your above ASR area
Other side of Hwy 80 at Colfax, the Bear River is gold bearing
Nice little camp ground at the bridge on Iowa Hill rd, comping on the Bear outside Colfax
The Bear is COLD, not that any are warm this time of year
In my opinion, leave the detector home, too MUCH trash
No physical perimeters, GPS, be lucky to find a claim sign
Claims can be as little as 20ac, no they arent always equal sides from the center
Get the forrest circus topo maps of the area and lay them out
So much area, so little time, good luck

    Bill

Thanks bill I’m going to try my luck at mineral bar and maybe do a couple test pans and definitely bring some dirt home but mostly scouting and learning the land but the advice was greatly appreciated and will be very useful to include in my process of how I adventure

Sorry bill not mineral bar. Between Murderers bar and murderers gulch. Got a good feeling about that one. Wish me luck.
