I saw an article on prepping a newly obtained gold pan earlier this year in the pick and shovel gazette. With my membership I received a new gold pan and would like some input as the gazette has come up missing. My wife obtained some concentrates for my anniversary present and I was hoping to get some practice in while the weather and work schedule hinder prospecting in the near future. Thank you in advance for your help and Happy Holidays.

    Hi David

The idea is that there is release agent put on the mold that the pan is formed from. This needs to be cleaned off and should be repeated if you think any oil has gotten on the pan. I personally use alcohol on a new pan first to clean off the release agent.  Oil on the pan is seen by dipping in water. Also some like to rough the pan up and take the sheen off the pan. This is not to groove the pan but just enough to take the sheen off of the surface. In the field you can take dry sand and move it around in the pan with your hand also. Hope this helps.

Hey David, One of the easiest ways to prep your pan at home is to wash it out with super hot water and a good degreaser to get all the release agent off the plastic. Then take a brand new green scrubbie pad and scrub all inside surfaces of the pan, riffles included. After this you should see that a little water put in the pan does not bead up and roll off, but grips the surface of the pans. I went a step further on my finishing pans and used 400 grit wet dry paper after the scrubbie pad. Hope this helps, Paul

Look up "How to Season Gold Pan" on youtube. Dan Hurd or AskJeffWilliams both do a fine job showing step-by-step how to season both plastic and tin pans.
Doc from Goldhog had a video showing my preferred method, but I believe it was a video on their matting, with a short snipit on seasoning.
Youtube has been my go to source for info on prospecting.
