This summer I am looking for a project for my grandchildren and me to build. I found the DIY vintage plans for a depression-era puffer. This looks fun to build.

My question is how does it compare to an actual drywasher in gold recovery? After we build the puffer, should I purchase a drywasher to show the kids what it is really supposed to do?

    Thanks for the in-put.

I have a puffer and I have a large leaf blower type dry washer they both are really good.when I’m checking out new areas I throw the puffer and a metal detector on my four wheeler and check at the mouths of washes fast and easy and quite, down right relaxing. If I find a good spot I mark it on gps and come back later with leaf blower dry washer and move some serious material.with me I guess it’s puffer for sampling and blower type for production.

The Puffer type also has the advantage of being quiet if you're running in an area you want to keep secret. The disadvantage is they can run down that battery quickly but if yours is equipped with a manual hand crank as a backup you should be good. I've used both side-by-side with the puffer being smaller and pound for pound found about the same amount of gold. As for anything with a lot of moving parts you may lose some hardware on the trip in/ out or while using so bring some extra bolts/ nuts/ pins/ zip ties. Good luck out there and stay safe.
