    Hi everyone,

I have been prospecting for a few years, but have always wanted to add metal detecting to it.  I live in Colorado, and much of the area has lots of black sand and other minerals.

I would love some suggestions for a good detector that is in the $700 or less  price range that will be good for detecting gold in mineralized areas.  Being waterproof would be a plus, too, but not essential.  I have been studying up on the Garrett AT Gold Metal Detector, and Minelab X-Terra 705 Metal Detector, so comments on them would be appreciated, too.

But, I'm open to suggestions about other machines from folks way smarter than me!

    Thank you for your help!

    Jeff

Catch show specials, you can add in the Lobo Super Trac and White's MXT and GMT.  The MXT has a little more versatility, but it all comes down to what works best for the areas you will be in and what else might strike your fancy.

We have the MXT, but live about 10 miles from the maker, and not much nugget shooting in our area.  Been happy with it for us.

Colorado: small gold, moderate to high mineralization. Perfect machine: GMT.

I have to recommend the Garrett AT series. Easy to use and set up, good detection, water proof to 10 feet they say and I have had good results with mine. I got a good deal for the detector, a pin pointer, and all the needed scoops etc to metal detect. For $729.

Well Jeff, Probably not smarter, but experience counts in this game.

Here's a good probable pick at a good price based on my 13+ years using it. The Whites Surmaster PI.

It is waterproof, will find coins and nuggets in black magnetic sand, is turn on and go:

just set the two knobs to the preset position and hunt in any kind of material.

I have found single #6 shot at 0ver 5", Fine gold chains in the sand, boat anchors at app. 4',

and a 2 Euro coin in black metallic sand. I have found flour gold 'bunched up' under rocks.

There are 3 versions of the surfmaster PI, all good, but the one with the pulse delay is the best.

You can pick up a used one for about $400.

    Hay, just my opinion,  Frank...-
