On most public land areas there is what is called dispersed camping. I would go to the web site for the surface management agency that manages the area that you want to camp in. Use dispersed camping in the search window or look in the campground section. Many areas also have free campgrounds with very limited services if any but usually have a vault toilet or trash containers.
