Hi Everybody. My name is Ed, and I've been into gold prospecting for the past 3 years. It all started from my interest in gold when I moved to Virginia in 2000 and found out our property is right in the middle of the Gold Belt of Virginia. Within a 2 mile radius, there are listed 18 old mines. I also happen to have a nice creek that starts up at one of the old mines and runs through my property. I've gone down a few times and tried panning in the creek, with no luck yet. We also have tons of red clay and HUGE quartz (size of some cars) and lots of smaller bolder size quartz strewn throughout the property.  My dream is to find a streak or lode somewhere on my land, but we all know that is a crapshoot.

I live near Goldvein, Virginia, which is also home to the Fauquier County Gold Mining Camp Museum at Monroe Park.

About 3 years ago, after watching many of the popular TV shows, I did more research and decided to order my first gold panning kit, and some paydirt from ebay and amazon. I spent the entire winter panning everything I could find. I tried dirt from every region I could find. After watching various how-to videos, I tried making some of my own equipment, and experiment with "free" or close to free options to capture gold. In the spring I attended a local gold gold club monthly meetings and heard about Marion, NC. We've been going back every year since. This year I plan to be up at the LDMA Vein Mountain claim, I hope to meet some of ya'll there. It's become our family's fathers day tradition to gold prospecting/panning. I also plan to attend this years Loud Mine outing in GA.

    Happy Digging,

    Ed

I am visiting my father in Louden County this week and wanted to do some panning. I brought some equipment with me and was going to visit the museum in Goldvein tomorrow 5/24/16. I am from southern Arizona and desert prospect, mostly drywashing. I am a gpaa member and was wondering if there are any claims I can go to somewhere nearby. My gpaa group has claims not listed in the main guide and I thought there maybe similar claims here. I am happy to help anyone heading to southern arizona with any claim information you need.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Hi Mike,

There is a local club that meets at the Goldvein gold mining camp museum on the first Saturday of each month. They have a local claim, but it's private property and requires a member be present at all times. I didn't renew my membership last year due to my family vacation schedule occurring every first Saturday .. so I don't currently have access. Other than that, I haven't been anywhere else in Virginia, yet.

I'm just starting to meet people here in VA, so I hope by the end of the year I'll have some places to go nearby. I did hear that down by Lake Anna, there are some creeks you can go in, I just don't know where yet. The VA Chapter for GPAA is the far SOUTH of Virginia and they may have a better list of places to go. I'm hoping to talk to the chapter president soon , about joining.  Also, I hear the Maryland GPAA chapter occasionally visits Northern Virginia, so they might have a few spots to share.

I wish I could be more help. I'm still kinda new at this.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold_mining_in_Virginia has a list of sites. Even lists one in Loudoun County.

    Regards,

    Ed

Jose - You may want to call the GPAA Chapter President for WVA about their prospecting laws and the fact that WVA has very little if any placer gold. Also question about state and national forest lands just to insure you do not have an unwanted problem. It's a beautiful state full of 1st class outdoor opportunities just waiting to be enjoyed so Good Luck and have a good time.
