Effective immediately, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is implementing fire restrictions on public lands managed by the Mother Lode Field Office. This includes approximately 23,000 acres of BLM-managed lands in Nevada, Yuba, Placer, El Dorado, Amador, Sacramento, Calaveras, Tuolumne, Stanislaus, Sutter and Mariposa Counties. The fire restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.

BLM Mother Lode/Hollister Fire Management Officer Jerry Martinez said the restrictions are needed due to dry fuels and fire danger throughout Central California. "A wildfire under these conditions could pose a serious threat to public land visitors and resources, and adjacent private lands and communities," he said.

According to Martinez, all campfires and barbeques are limited to designated fire rings in designated campgrounds. Portable stoves with gas, jellied petroleum or pressured liquid fuel are authorized with a valid California campfire permit, but the public is asked to be extremely careful with their use and carry a shovel and water at all times.

Other restrictions include:

  • Do not operate tools powered by internal combustion engines off established roads or trails.
  • No smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, or at a designated developed recreation site, or other designated areas.
  • No motorized vehicles off established roads or trails.
  • No shooting using incendiary, tracer, steel core or armor piercing ammunition.
  • No fireworks, including "safe and sane" fireworks.

The BLM advises homeowners to "Take Responsibility" and keep 100 feet of clean, open space around their homes to provide defensible space and improve the chance that their homes and families can be saved in an uncontrolled wildfire.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), California Desert District, will implement additional fire restrictions beginning on Friday, May 23,2014 in order to reduce the risk of wildfires on public lands within portions of the Palm Springs/South Coast Field Office, The El Centro Field Office and the Ridgecrest Field Office.

Fire restrictions are necessary due to the continued and very dangerous drought and the early start to the fire season. These additional fire restrictions relate to areas that are currently in Stage III restrictions, or those areas that are deemed necessary to move into Stage III restrictions. In addition, shooting related wildland fires have steadily increased in the California Desert District since 2009.

The BLM will continue to monitor conditions and adjust fire restrictions accordingly. Complete details regarding additional fire restrictions, seasonal and year-round fire restrictions, including fire restriction area maps, can be found at: http://blm.gov/vxld. Public land users are strongly encouraged to access the information in order to become familiar with the fire restrictions and fire prevention safety tips.

Violation of these restrictions is punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000, or imprisonment of not more than 12 months, or both (43 CFR 9212.4).

Fire officials are reminding homeowners to "Take Responsibility" and keep 100 feet of clean, open space around their homes to provide defensible space and improve the chance that their homes and families can be protected in an uncontrolled wildfire.
