Hey Robert, Welcome to the GPAA family. I hope you have years of fun and enjoyment from prospecting.

My one suggestion to you would be to check out and join one of the local chapters, they can help you get off on the right foot, and are a great source of friends and knowledge.

Looks like the nearest chapter has closed and the next one closest hasn't updated their club page since last year. But i'll keep looking for one. Thanks for the welcome and suggestion.

Also a new member with the fever.

I am from Oklahoma and very interested in New Mexico and Arizona.  Since New Mexico was closest we started there.  What had adventure in the Ancho Jicarilla area.  No cell phone service for 50 or 60 miles.  I wasn't prepared for that and also got my big ford 4 wheel drive stuck in a hidden trench.  Thank god there was another GPAA member camped close to us.  Worked out really well.  We met some really nice folks.

On the chapter thing, I clicked on the Join Chapter button for the New Mexico Gold Prospectors but nothing ever happened.  Emailed the lady there and made a good friend in that chapter.  She manually added me to their chapter and can't wait to visit and go on a chapter dig next month north of Tularosa.  I email a chapter in Arkansas three or four days ago and never received a reply.  The whole point of this writing is get with a chapter if you can because they have a lot of experienced people and a lot of experience to pass down.  I am almost 70 and am ready for the best adventure of my life in prospecting.  We plan to retire next year and spend as much time as possible in the field.  Great exercise for the mind and body.

We live out by Kellyville OK.  It is a few miles from Sapulpa.  Guess what, we also bought an AT Gold a while back.  Getting all this together for retirement.  35 foot fifth wheel and side by side next year.  Then we can stay out as long as we want and where we want.

    Robert,

I agree with Paul, join a local chapter. It will save you a lot of time on the learning curve.

I think the Paso Robles chapter is the closest to you, which just so happens to be the chapter that I belong to, so see you there May 1st! I know it is a bit of a drive for you but if you can make it, it will be worth your while. There a lot of knowledgeable people there that are always willing to help.

    Good luck, Jere.

    Robert,

Do some research on areas to prospect in Mariposa before you go and bring a pan at least. That's southern Motherlode country,,,,lots of gold left up that direction.

Good luck, see you in June, Jere.

Robert, while in Mariposa, if you have free time, you may want to try the Briceburg Recreation Area on the Merced River. The first campground is open to sluicing and panning, detecting is okay. the second,  third, and Railroad flat camping areas have claims on them. No poo, or other paper work is necessary in this park. Have fun.

I wish for some free time, got my wife and mother in law riding with me, so there won't be free time. On a brighter note received my AT Gold tonight and the backyard will never be the same. Definitely will go back to Mariposa next month after i practice a bit with it, thanks for info.
