My husband and I want to go to the Husker # 1 claim between Deadwood and Sturgis on 3/ 21/ 15. Is there a campground and do I  need a permit for panning, slucing or metal detecting. Also why does the guide say no bucket or shovel?

I would contact the land management agency that has control of the ground the claim is on.  If USFS or BLM, they can tell you of campgrounds nearby, and if those restrictions are imposed by the agency or not.  They could be either agency or claim owner imposed for various reasons.  Might also drop a line or call to Walter Eason at the GPAA office and he might have further information.

I heard from the local GPAA chapter head a few days ago that the water wasn't running last he heard. They've had a extremely dry winter so it may not even run this year. I was planning on checking out the Husker claim as well in early April. I'd suggest the Maryann claim as an alternative if it is dry, I don't think there is a water issue there. Good luck and let me know what the Husker looks like if you do go!
