Need some help. Will be going through New Mexico 2nd week of April, wanted to try the Placer Creek claims. Can anyone tell me about them. Will be my first time on a claim. Is is easily found and accessible that time of year. Any information would be appreciated. Or any information on any other claims in New Mexico that I could set up a gold cube. Thanks, Bob Foley

Beware, Placer Creek is at an elevation of 9000 feet. Chances are that April is too early and will still have deep snow. I also believe the Forest Service does not open the area until June 1. The road in is also 4wd and pretty rough. If you are not accustomed to high altitude it can be tough on your body. Beautiful country.

Thanks for the info, I was kinda afraid of that, wondering if I will have the same problem in Co. that is where I am starting my trip from, I was told the winter is a good time because the snow hasn't melted yet and the creeks aren't high yet, guess I will have to see. Thanks again, Bob

The claims are only open for 3 months, The altitude is a bear. The road down to the claims was very rough, we has 2WD and nearly didnt make it out. Beware if you are down on the claims and the rains come as the road out will very quickly become unpassable. It is beautiful there and after we got used to the altitude, had a great time.
Also be aware in New Mexico if you are going to use any powered equipment you need a wet permit from New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division.
