I'm a new member to the GPAA and would like to try the Homack # 1 - 3 claim outside of Idaho Springs. Anybody visit the claim recently ? Is it well marked ? Anything I should know before I go. I plan on panning or using a small sluice if their is water.

    Hello Scott,

My son and I were up at the Homack #1-3 claim back in June, the area is nice with a small stream flowing along the road. This stream is seasonal and there was still some snow on the ground in areas so i don't know if there is still water flowing or not. We never did find any claim markers but I ended up running into another GPAA member that was in the area and he confirmed that we were in the correct area. We found tons, and I mean tons of black sand but only ended the day with 2 micro specks of gold. We focused the majority of our efforts around the water because of ease of access for my 5 year old and ease of panning near the water. The claim goes up over the hill from the road quite a ways with some dry gulches which could have better potential but I cannot verify this. It could be a good claim for metal detecting but all the reports (verbal and written) were the same as what I and the other GPAA member discovered, very little gold to be found. The Denver Chapter of the GPAA had an outing scheduled for this claim to do a mapped dig to find out where if any the gold was located on this claim but all of their outing have been canceled so it never happened. Feel free to contact me as I am always open to getting out and prospecting with other people. Good luck to you and I will be interested in hearing how your trip turns out.

    Hi Brian,

Thanks for the reply. I would be interested in getting together for a prospecting trip. Saturdays work best for me.
Maybe the gold is up higher on the claim. I noticed on the topo map that no mines are real close by. If you use maps go with an older one . I bought a 2013 topo of the area yesterday and it shows no mines, prospects or tunnels.
