    Hello

I am a Greenhorn,..I bought a Garrett Pro Gold MD, a pan, and a few other "do-dads"...it looks like the orange water pro would be useful on dry land and under water.   I see Garrett just came out with an updated black (dry land) model that looks good,..but dry land.

I would love to hear from of you users,..what you think about the actual item and is it useful,...and the model you like and why.

Thank you ahead of time for any information you can inpart.

Are you asking about the ProPointer, as your subject line suggest? If so, I own both the older black version and the new orange waterproof one. I love them both and take one every trip. They really help reduce dig times and the amount you dig... ALOT! I like to think that finding the treasure is about the number of targets you dig before you hit the gold. So that means you need to dig more targets per time period to find the good stuff - the ProPointers greatly increase your dug targets. Before I even dig I sweep the Pointer across the ground, and about 1/2 the time it detects and I barely have to dig. I like the orange one because of its greater sensitivity (range) and being waterproof. I sometimes end up near water unexpectedly - or it rains on me. Plus the alarm features are great in case you forget to pick it up or it gets buried. They are both build very well - very rugged construction. Top notch quality, as in all Garrett products. One more thing; the ProPointer is a necessity if you use a large coil and don't like to dig huge holes, as it is hard to locate the exact target when the coil can only give you about a 8" location to dig. Then, when you're 6" down in the hole you can't get the coil in there to locate the target and you may dig right past it if it's in the side of your hole. If you watch the Aussies (username TheNuggetMagnet) on YouTube you'll see they dig HUGE holes because most don't have access to the ProPointer and have to get the target out of the hole to locate it.

Stan thanks for the informative post. I never thought much about those Garrett pointers. But after reading your post I thought just how good that would work, as I had those situations you described, and this would be ideal solution. I was wondering just how sensitive are they, will they ring on small gold pickers under a couple of inches.? Well I guess if the primary MD finds something, then this critter should pick up on it, even though the power may not be as strong as the main machine.

I still have the older black pro pointer and would not hunt without one. Especially useful when chasing a target. If you pay attention the alert tone will tell you how far you are from the target. slow beep around 4 inches to solid tone when in contact or millimeters away. Also very rugged. Like using the pin pointer so much, I will purchase the new one. When shooting coins, I have enough power in my old style pro pointer, that I use it before I dig, placing the nose of the device flat down on the target area and move it around until I get a tone.  Lets me know spot on if the target is within approx. four inches of the top of the soil, and straight down.  If I get a weak beep or no signal I know its deeper.

Spot on Kenneth. As for pickers, it will not detect them unless they are like BB size or so, and that would not have much range. It also will alert on hot rocks and mineralized soil. It does a weird thing where if you're in hot ground it will alert when you press it into the dirt but not if you wave it across.

I just place an order for one of those orange Garrett pointers. I should have it on Saturday. Going out to Nevada next week hopefully I will get a day out in the fields to try it and see how it works. I for one always have that issue trying to pin point a target with a large coil.

Bring your winter gear! We had snow down to 5000 feet in the Reno area last night! Good luck on your quest!

Thanks Nancy....yeah I couldn't believe it....gee so early. One of my employees texted me last night and seen it was at 32 degrees early in the evening. I am thinking yeah it is gonna be a bad winter with the El Nino deal going on. Last year at this time, we went camping down at Pine Grove south of Yerington for a few days.....snowed on us at 5500 and went down to 10 degrees....luckily we had our propane heaters.

Love my black Pro Pointer and I wouldn't be without it. Just a FYI, you can "ground balance" these pointers if it gets a little erratic in the hole your searching. With the power on touch the tip of your pro pointer to the soil and leave it there as you turn it off. Now turn it back on and it should be a bit more accurate.

I would suggest the orange PRO POINTER AT.

For $17 more it is water proof to 10 feet, high visibility

    and

Shrink detection field to precisely pinpoint large targets

Tune out mineralized ground, wet beach sand, etc.

    Help gauge target size/distance

Help identify edges of large target

Pinpoint multiple targets versus one large target signal

Lost Pro-Pointer Alarm: After 5 minutes with no button presses, the pinpointer emits periodic warning chirps.

Automatic power off after 60 minutes of warning chirps; saves batteries.

Simple, single-button operation for Power, Retune, Sensitivity adjustment, and Stealth Mode.

Ruler in Inches and Centimeters molded into side of pinpointer to judge target depth.

Lanyard Attachment Loop molded into side of pinpointer.

New power button is easy to operate even with gloves.
