    Hello!
I am new to prospecting and new to GPAA but having a great time so far. Recently I found myself on a claim out in the Sierras with no immediate access to facilities. I was grossed out when I saw a very shallow "pit" covered in used toilet paper between the parking lot and the creek. Not only was it close to the creek (<50ft), which can create unhygienic conditions for us all in the creek, it was in what looked like the leftovers of a dredge operation that would otherwise be a good place to look for flakes (Maybe? that's another question for another day...) This particular claim, Lucky Buck, is easy to access and has a convenient parking lot and room for camping. When I have camped in the past, especially in environmentally sensitive areas, all fecal elimination (pooping, copping a squat, whatever is appropriate here) was done 200 feet from any water.

What are the guidelines for prospectors? And can guidelines be posted on the claim? Are there any claims that have a honey bucket nearby? Do people bring their composting toilet with them?

OK, I think that's plenty for a first time post. Thanks you all for insights, and happy prospecting!

This is definitely not right and shows lack of education and personal hygiene. It is disgusting and as much as I want to make a joke of someone wasting toilet paper in the woods at this uncertain time, think please of what you’re doing.

I know this was first posted back in March, I spend a lot of time in AZ and CA out on the desert claims and usually camp 2 or 3 days on the claims and all the camp sites I've been at people have done great not leaving any signs around of their business. Not as good as in some of the NF campsites I've camped at though (I/we boondock camp). I take a porta potty with us, only about $50.00 and being I have the wife or one of my daughters with me I also have a small pop up outhouse tent, they like their privacy even out in the middle of nowhere. Most of the time I can find a dump station to empty it before I head home, but dumping it into the toilet when I get home isn't to bad. This works out real good for us, so maybe it's an option for you too.

I'm part owner of three claims on USFS ground. No facilities within a couple of miles. FS put up signs on all the dispersed sites....make like a cat, bury at least 6 inches, stay 200 ft from water sources.

2 of those claims are getting better, but due to that and trash being left everywhere in the area, they may severely limit future camping opportunities.

In some areas you have to have a fire pan to build a campfire in (no fires on the ground) and carry toilet facilities, usually in environmentally sensitive areas.
