    Good afternoon from Arizona,

I am a resident of Tucson and have been here my whole life.  I went down by Arivaca and got lucky and found about 9 grams in about 3 hours.  I have been on a dry streak and need to get wet again.  I want to try detecting in a more prosperous area.  Can anybody recommend some claims in Arizona preferably SOUTH of Flagstaff that have been know to produce detectable nuggets?  I am brand new to GPAA and still learning the ropes and protocol and mojo.  Everyone who digs for gold always seems willing to help if people would just ask.  So that's what I am doing.  You can always private message me on my Email (theace115@gmail.com) if you don't want to publicly share your favorite claim,  but I just need help getting out of my funk.

Thank you in Advance, and stay safe out there.

    Hi Alex,
Nice find....you found 9 grams with the detector? I was just wondering if you did do that with the detector, how many individual pieces and how deep were they? Is this surface finds? What kind of detector?
    Regards,

    Hello Leo,

if you click on my profile picture, those are the nuggets. I found the smaller of them on/in bedrock. I found the 8.1 grammer on the bank in the same area. They were close to the surface (~3" under). I was using a GPX 5000. You are not the same Lorenz as Lorenz metal detectors out of Germany? Just a Coincidence?

Oh yeah they look great. Ok well i guess they could have been found with any VLF as well...ie GoldBug. Gee, i never knew they had detectors....but I know I am not part of that organization...although the family does come from the area. Maybe its a genetic thing...why I am interested in detecting huh? I will have to check out their products! I never detected in AZ but looking to do so sometime soon.....Still looking for my first nuggets.

These Lorenz detectors are the best of the best when it comes to PI DEEP seeking detectors. they're anywhere from 6k to 10k USD.

    Alex,

Seriously?? Better than the Minelab? Are they made for gold finding as well. I know Germany makes very high quality products but never thought they would produce metal detectors. Do they have gold in Germany?

These detectors are great for finding deep big targets like Muonionalusta Meteorites. I do not know if they have any "Minelab Style" metal detectors

I am not near my claims guide, but if we still have claims near Greaterville it is a good area. Lots of trash, but also big gold.

    Bob,

How do you like the Gold Bug Pro? Mine seems to be noisy when lifting or touching the coil to the ground, after its been balanced. What sensitivity level do you mostly work within? That is probably my issue.....but I was always thinking that cutting back on the sensitivity would affect the depth, but now I know that is not quite true. I had been using it up in the 60-70 range. The ground that you run yours in is probably much more mineralized than what I see up in Nevada. But I am interested on what you see performance wise with yours.

Yes we have very hot rocks & ground. I try to keep mine set at a low hum so that even a small piece of gold will set it off, but so does every thing else. I try to hear the right sound. Disc mode cuts too much of the sensitivity, in my opinion. I play test with some small pieces of gold so I will know how to set it & what listen for. I still haven't figured what the numbers represent!?

Hmmm okayyyy.....but what number do you set the sensitivity to? When you say that you have not "figured out what the numbers represent" which numbers are you speaking about? There are numbers for the ground balance......when you first turn it on and have it in the air, there will be a number showing which represents the "ground reference" and bringing the coil closer to the ground, the ground reading will change,....and lifting or dropping the coil in reference to the ground will cause a sound to increase or decrease. But the sensitivity setting is independent of that. Usually a good target will register lower on the scale than the ground reference number, and if it is iron or something undesirable....the reading will go higher than the nominal ground balance setting. Wondering how you can use it if you are not familiar with the numbers??

I've played with the sensitivity & found that its best around the 12:00 (or halfway). If I turn it up all the way it drains the battery quicker.  The numbers on the screen which represent the ground or what ever you run the coil over. Most of the time it stays around 78 + or -.

The all metal knob I turn up as high as I can before it starts buzzing constantly. I figure that will give me the most sensitivity. I seems to work when I test it with some grains of gold. Hope all that makes sense. Am I doing it right?

No i do not think you are. When you first turn it on...with the left power knob......you go over to the "all metal" knob and slowly increase the knob clockwise until you just hear the buzzing at a comfortable minimum level. This has nothing to do with the sensitivity. Then you go back to the power knob and as you increase clockwise.....you are now setting the sensitivity....which is the "gain". You will see the number on the display change the moment the knob gets moved....and the reading changes up to 100 which is the max gain. ( which I dont think you would ever run at ) This is the only adjustment which controls the overall sensitivity of the machine. Then from there you need to ground balance with the - or + push buttons and the numbers switch from sensitivity level to ground balance.....when you put the coil to the ground.....the reading will be the ground....when you pick it up....the number will change.....you want to adjust that until the "air" number matches the "ground" number.........Or you can pump the coil up and down while listening for "minimum change" when lifting or dropping to the ground...........as you move along on the ground the soil mineralization can change so you have to also keep adjusting as you move along. If you change the sensitivity/gain on the left....you will have to rebalance to ground......And the most important thing is.....if you find it difficult to ground balance.......then you need to lower the sensitivity/gain until the machine is stable...............Forget about "discriminate" .....you want to dig it all.

Right o. I said sensitivity for the right knob (disc/all metal) because as you continue to turn it to the right, at some time it will continue to increase the buzzing louder & louder. I didn't mention ground balancing, of course I do that. Its not so much that I want to dig it all, but I think it looses too much sensitivity (theres that word again) in disc mode. All this I have confirmed by checking it over some small gold. If it doesn't buzz on the gold then what good is it. I have another cheaper detector that can find all the junk I want. I leave it at home any more. Thanks for helping me confirm that I'm doing it right. Do you have a Gold Bug Pro, also? How do you like it?

Yes I have a GB Pro too and been using it for about a year only in northern Nevada. It doesnt have a volume knob, but the threshhold setting is like one almost....by turning it higher it will only give more noise.....but yes.... allowing a change in the noise to be amplified more. But that doesn't give the detector increased sensitivity, in the true sense of electronic processing. I do like it regardless, but because it is a VLF, it does have issues running it in highly mineralized soil, which most advise, to turn the sensitivity down.....but when doing that I will lose depth. And then i start wondering what am I missing by running at those settings. Thats why having a second detector like a PI is needed, too run over that same ground.......but geez...double work maybe for no reason because there may not be any gold at all.... But no one every says that its gonna be easy to find.

Yea, I think if I had Minelab I wouldn't use the GB pro. Maybe some day. My latest project is building a rock crusher. I have some hot rocks that I want to see whats in them. Maybe some gold, who knows. I picked them up by Campo Bonito where a lot of gold has been mined. All in a days work.

Campo Bonito  has been good to me, but it is a desert diggers claim ,not GPAA.

Bill Southern, the R double j claim is a good area in Add to dictionary, stay on the bedrock, if you do not mind hiking you will end up along the old Pennsylvania  placers where hydraulic mining was done, pipes still lying on the ground.(not a GPAA claim - open) you can also find sucker gulch, Boston gulch and several other areas that were mined 150 years ago.

Hey Bob thanks for the map & info. I have a friend who has claims down there. It seemed to be pretty well picked over where I went. I never saw this map in the guide? Is there somewhere on this site to download missing pages (maps, etc.)

Just to add that what joining a club does for us is this..... EDUCATION..... Right, I mean no one is gonna get rich finding gold perhaps on club claims, but the knowledge about the area and comradery is the big score. You have access to gold bearing areas and most any GPAA claim I have been to I find gold. Why? I have used this great organization to further my learning as well as several other clubs. I use available books and re-prints of bureau of mines info, Geologic maps, and any other info I can find. So say you are on a claim in the San Domingo Placer district of Maricopa CO, Arizona you found in your claims guide. You also come with literature mentioned to tell you about local deposits, how much gold was found, size of average gold nuggets and particles, distribution, and more. Suddenly you can look around and understand why the old timers worked here and how and much more.....

    You are informed.....

Keeps ya from getting out of your vehicle and asking yourself "Now What"

    Alex,

On the West side of the Double J claims over East of Prescott last winter and so far this winter there have been over 50 nuggets found (nothing real big).  Only a couple inches deep.  Stay out of the dry wash bottoms and work the sides of the slopes.  Heavy brush makes for a lot of work though.

I use a Garmin Oregon 600. My memory sucks, every spot looks like the last spot, If I find an area I like I weather it is drywashing or metal detecting, I mark it with the GPS. I mark all claims that I have or will visit in google earth, pinpoint locations I like ,transfer the locations to the GPS so they are easier to find. Otherwise it is a needle in a haystack.
With most claims 40 - 360 acres try to find a 10 x 10 foot patch you were at a year  ago.

    Hello Dennis,

I was curious, you mentioned 50 nuggets found on the Double J claims,---Have you actually found some of these???, or are you going by "hearsay" from others??   I have hunted that area in the past a couple of times without good results due to the heavy brush, and have sort of avoided it since.   Gary

    Gary,

I have found part of them and was present when several others were found.  You mentioned the heavy brush, that is where the nuggets are.  It takes a lot of work but you can remove some of the dead brush and search.  The area most of them came from has pretty much been cleaned out but I'm confident that there are other areas out there that will produce nuggets.  Just have to spend the time to find the spots.  We have also had great luck dry washing for flakes throughout all the claims in that area.  If I was staying in that area again this year, I would be in there detecting and dry washing (moisture permitting) every day.  I'm camping down by Quartzsite this winter and am struggling to find a good place to prospect and detect in this area.

Thanks Dennis,  I might venture out that way before the summer heat hits us and see if I can find a spot or two.  Are they mostly along the banks of the wash, or higher up on the ridges??  Normally I am a bottom (wash bed) detectorist, so working under the scrub brush will be new to me.  When you where finding the nuggets, did you ever find a pattern or line of nuggets to follow to try to find their source?  I do that often in washes and many times track down the source of where they are actually coming from (which in some cases leads to a patch or pocket).

As for Quartzsite, I haven't ever detected there, but you might try contacting Chris Gholson at the Arizona Outback Gold Forum, and / or Bill Southern at the Nugget Finder Gold Forum.  These are their own forums, and I think that both have hunted the Quartzsite area many times and would know where to suggest you try.  I know Chris definitely has.  Thanks Again.  Gary

    Hey Dennis,

I went out to the area on the Double J yesterday for a couple of hours for a look-see.  Man, that area is Thick in buck brush and manzanita.  You talk about an area difficult (if not impossible) to walk thru without a struggle, this is it!!!  The wash has really been hammered to death by past diggers in search of the yellow.  I attempted to detect up on the sides  of the slopping hillsides without luck.  Question for you:  When you (and others) where finding the nuggets where they found in the lower-bank along the wash (as there where many areas dug out along the bank), or up higher on the hillsides, or tops of the hills???  I found a couple of areas along the upper hillsides where there had been small areas opened up (cleared of brush) in amongst the thick brush, sort of like paths made to get to the tops.  I also couldn't do any detecting while I was right under the overhead power lines do the EMI.  Gary

    Gary,

If you are still up tonight, give me a call at 7193201877 if you would like. Do you live locally here? What type of detector are you using?  Sounds like you were in the correct area. This year, we have found a couple nuggets in the dry wash, but previously we found them up higher. If you found the areas where the old dead brush was moved out of the way, you were in the right areas.  I forgot to tell you about the EMI with the power lines above.

    Dennis,

Yes, I live in the Prescott Valley area and have for many years, as I was born and raised in Prescott (one of the few natives still here).  I run a Minelab GP-3000, and in that thick pain-in-the-butt buck brush I use a Coilteck Joey (very hot) Elliptical coil.  Due to the last couple of days of rain we had over here the washes are no longer dry.  This wash running thru the Double J is very wet, muddy, and the dug-out parts of the wash are full of water that pooled in them.  The wash that merges with the Double J wash (south of it) is actually running with a steady flow of water.  As for dead brush, I really couldn't tell if the brush had been removed (I couldn't find any dead brush just laying around the area), or if someone had just cleared a walking trail up the side of the little hillside to get to the top??  I was upstream of the power lines due to the excessive EMI when I found these semi-cleared-out brush areas.

    Christine Gold,

I was only on the Double J claim the other day, so I don't know what kind of road conditions you would be facing going into the other claim.  And I went in thru the Green gate just off of Hwy 69, then cut up thru the old railroad cut, and then right onto a dirt road on up over the hill, and then left at the power line down to the Double J where the two washes merge.  This dirt road is pretty much all exposed bedrock, so no muddy patches, nor issues.  ...Gary

Going to Phx in Aug only for 1 week .taking my detector and would like to do some detecting. I am GPAA . Going to Sedona, Cottonwood and can get over to Prescott. Where is the best area to try for a morning of fun. Is there a better area now that some rain is hitting these areas. I will only have a rental car not 4 x 4. My e mail is GMORK@ATT.NET. Sure would like some data , or ideas in the claims guide would help. GEM

The Prescott forest is closed due to the Goodwin fire so all the GPAA claim within the forest boundaries are closed. Both Soldier Boy and Double JJ are not open at this time. Congress should be open. Not sure about the gold there. Black Canyon group north should be open. Access is by 2WD. Once again, not sure about any gold there either.

It's very hot out there! Early mornings are best. Stay hydrated. Don't want search and rescue coming to get you.

    Good luck ---------------------------------

Call the caretakers at Stanton LDMA camp. I was told they have permission for GPAA members to use another members claims near camp. The claims added this year for LDMA members have been producing nice little nuggets. The nugget Kia Massie found on Gold Fever was from March on a LDMA claim near camp. I have seen others. And yes I will plug here, you can go to the outing in a November and have access to those other claims and the LDMA claims at the same time. Good Hunting all.

Both Soldier Boy and Double JJ are not in the National Forest they are on the outside, just rechecked the National Forest clearing house GIS boundary layers. Thought there may have been a change, this is not to say that BLM may not have them closed due to fire but they are not under National Forest Service surface management.

After Finding a 2.9 Gram nugget near Greaterville and a 8.4 Gram Nugget in Polaris Claim,  I'm thinking those are my favorites,  I would like to go up north and detect in Prescott.
Excellent choice.... No reason to leave gold for gold, maybe. :-)

Leo,  Please do not worry about where others are setting their detectors. It will change on a weekly/dally/hourly/minute  basis while you are in the field even in the same location. In your Mining Guide, read pages CU-24-30. It's designed to help you get the most out of your detector.

Amazing to see this post still active!!!! There is a lot of good information coming out to get some people out and about!! Thanks for all of the knowledge being spread around. I am hoping to go to Prescott to prospect. Is there an estimate as to when the claims / roads will reopen?

    Thank you

Over the past few weeks, I have spoken to some known coil designers and others.....and.....now I realized quite a few technical nuances when out MD'ing that just makes this whole process a challenge to conquer. It not just a simple thing to go out and ground balance, set the threshold and start hunting. I was told by some, that they can take a 20x20 square area of ground and spend 5 hours working it! And I thought impossible. But with new insight on the actual technical aspects of the MD......yep it could be true. Different size coils, and a slow very tight overlap of swings, and changing settings, all can make a dramatic impact on success. And understanding the limitations of the machine, will help a person to understand the importance of a disciplined approach. And dont forget the "human factors" as well. Its very easy to start daydreaming while swinging the coil. Not being mentally tuned in to what you are doing will also help you miss those small signals which are easy to pass over.

I have learned a lot from Kevin and Bill the last 2 years. I want to add one thing, practice. Take your machine into the back yard or corner park. Get in the habit of balance, set threshold, swing do it again. Do it until it issecond nature when the machine is in your hand. I know it sounds weird, but if you are so comfortable with your machine, you do these things without having to think about it, then you are listening to the machine be, and you have confidence in it. Not only does it make it more fun, you will find more. Watch Kevin Or Bill, Or Calvin Bunker, or some one you know in that class work. They don't hesitate , they are balancing constantly as they go and not even thinks big about it. And that takes practice.

I just came by to check out my post. 30+ K Views!!! That is amazing! Even for a while it was one of the most popular threads! I went out to wickenburg and found a few pieces of gold with the help of a couple guys on Bill Southern's Forum. Great people, They both did some placering with my dad and I, taught us the tricks of the trade and we both found gold. This weekend we went to Arivaca, and took what we learned from these guys, and found a couple of nice pieces too!!

I sincerely appreciate the help from everyone here. I am finding gold again and having a blast. i have met some new people and hope to go out and teach others. (this is not a farewell, just expressing my appreciation)

Go get it Ladies and Gents!! It is still out there!!!
