What are the rules about metal detecting on beaches? I want to go swing my detector on a few San Diego public beaches this week. The beaches are all city (or maybe state) beaches, no claims or private land or anything like that.

I moved here to Tennessee from florida, here are the rules, You need to check with the local city and see if its against the law. Usually most public beaches are ok to detect on unless forbidden by local rules. Even if allowed, make sure it is not located in a national or state park area. Defianatly not allowed there.

I agree with James the rules could be different everywhere best to check it out with the authorities. Most should be ok with it. Pitch in the fact that you pick up trash as you go. Let them know its a productive safe hobby

Was metal detecting the Treasure Beach this weekend north of Wabasso Beach. Dunes were really eroded, especially in front of the Treasure Museum. Found a lot of junk....cleaned the beach a bit......so tempting knowing there were treasure ships just yards off the beach years ago.
