I live in Nevada city ca in the middle of gold country. I live 6 miles from Bridgeport and a 2 mile hike from the Yuba River and a few creeks that have gold I want to start gold panning the area That’s close to me. How do you dig in a pans and hand only area do you dig with your gold pan to get down deeper in the gravel beds. I’m looking for tips on how other people pan these sort of areas. What do you use to help.

    Joshua,

By definition, hands and pans .
There are many places very close to you, that dont have many if any restrictions, other than dredging
Bear river comes to mind, Yankee Jims, Dutch Flat, rivers confluence on Old Forest Hill Rd
so many places so little time
there are listed GPAA claims not far away for you to enjoy
Unless you need civilization around you, look for other places to dig
Avoid hands n pans areas if your serious

Thanks William I’m aware of all the areas around me. Sometimes I don’t want to go drive 20 miles to get there. When I’m sort on time There is a creek a half a mile from my house that’s in the pan and hands area. That’s close to the Yuba. I’m more looking for what sort of pan people use to dig in the gravel. I been thinking about A heavy duty metal pan to dig with and use my good pans to process.

I thought "hands and pan" also allowed hand "tools", such as a crevice scraper or shovel..?

I could never get a straight answer on a "crevice sucker" (no - I know it looks exactly like a hand "dredge", but it's not...it 's a sucker...). Some say it is a "hand tool", others say it uses "mechanical principles" (but it IS un-powered), therefore it is "mechanical equipment".

A rocker box using a hand-dipper or bucket to feed water is considered NON-mechanical, and is treated the same as a stream sluice...or so I have been told.
