Prospector Dean's intel on the new MT claims

Prospector Dean's intel on the new MT claims
Great historical info on the Rimini District can be found at http://deq.mt.gov/Land/AbandonedMines/linkdocs/103tech . I did not stake these claims but looked them up using Google Earth. I did some sampling in summer 2016 just below the Peerless Jennie Silver Mine, a reclaimed mine up the mountain south of Rimini. Found a little silver but no gold. These new claims are not near where I sampled, but quite a ways downstream on the other side of Rimini. They are in an area that has been mined since the late 1800's. Water is available. The old mining town of Rimini is worth a visit. Lots old buildings, including one with a mannequin woman seated in the second story window. My family in 2016 found the locals are friendly IF YOU DRIVE SLOW through town. Suction dredging requires several permits/fees from the Forest Service and County Water Quality board.

First gold found here!
Step 1 of 1
First gold found here!
I visited this site late last summer with the family for the first time right after getting my first set of pans.
We were panning just for fun to try it out and slowly working our way up stream near the bridge. I decided to try my luck behind a larger rock where the flow slowed down. Before I even started digging, I looked down and saw what looked like a decent piece of gold just sitting right on top of the gravel just behind the rock. I used my small scoop to scoop it up with the surrounding gravel and deposited it in my pan.
I was shocked to find out that it was actually a gravel sized nugget (would you even call it a nugget at that point?) I have no idea what the mesh size was but it definitely was a piece of gold.
We spent the next 30 minutes digging behind this rock in the stream and panning the results. Ended up with some smaller gold flakes.
It was definitely worth the trip and we will be back this summer, especially since now I realize that there is much more area that we can prospect on - and now I have a river sluice .
