BLM Sign gone

The BLM Sign at the turn off directing you to Rock Creek is gone. And the claim sign is blank. This was my first visit to any GPAA claims. We were there the afternoon of August 9th and the morning of August 10th. We could not believe that we had the place to ourselves! I was surprised to see huge holes dug in the top of the bank and if the river bed, but if that part of the process then okay. Panned a bit but enjoyed the solitude more. We could see specks of gold but way too small to separate. We picked up some items of trash that we found in plain view too. Will go back as we enjoyed the silence and then the sound of running water.

Have fun, but don't expect much!

I am a novice, so take my opinion for what it's worth. We found a few tiny specks on the north end of the Carol Placer, which was easily accessible. The MUPU was an irritating hike and a bit of a pain to access, but found similar. We used a pan and sluice box. I will attach pictures, and hopefully a link to a YouTube video if allowed. I personally would find another place next time because I had to travel quite a bit to get here. Here is a link to the YouTube video of our visit to the claim: https://youtu.be/0QCPMba3JDU

There’s a reason the old timers stopped upstream

Not the greatest prospecting at this spot, especially for the novice. If you get tired of this area go upstream a couple of miles and you’ll find an old dredge boat and you can detect the scallops and find plenty of specimens. You can even pan and find the finer gold they left behind.
Best thing about this area is the solitude mixed with other activities that the family would enjoy. On July 4th South Pass puts on an excellent fireworks display.

Plenty of Potential

This was my first trip to Carol Placer. (I didn't get to MUPU Placer). I updated the directions, (see "Getting There"), with a few key features that will zero you in on the twists and turns. The trail down to the claim wasn't as bad as I had heard. Just DON'T dare veer of the trail at all, due to sharp rocks.
The creek had a good amount of water, though the flow was less then I would have liked for sluicing, since it was August 2nd and 3rd. There were many holes and depressions along the bank from previous miners. Please fill in your dig spots. I panned and sluiced for about 8 hours total over the time I was there. Not a lot, but a good effort considering I had some small kids with me who needed supervision.

History of the Area

This area has produced a lot of gold and has a great deal of mining history. Do not leave the area without visiting historic South Pass City and the Carissa Mine (Restored) and all of the historic buildings and mercantile.
