No motor vehicles from Jan 1 to June 15 to protect wildlife habitat. Elevation 10,100 feet. You will be out of breath.
Take US Hwy 285 toward Fairplay. RT 20 is South of Fairplay. Turn West on RT 20. Go about 3 miles to Rt 658. Turn North at the sign Browns Pass 4.5 miles (Rt 658). Rt 658 is called Browns Pass Road on my GPS. RT 20 and Rt 658 are smooth dirt. The Coordinate Update by Walter Easton dated 5/22/17 is correct for the GPS coordinates. Drive through the heavy gate at N 39º10'07.96", W -106º02'45.47"(No key codes are needed. If the gate is closed by the USFS (Jan 1 to June 15), nobody is getting in). (There is probably too much snow to even walk in before June 15). Drive to the Placer Ditch (stream) which crosses the road (approx ¼ mile). The last ¼ mile of the road is rocky, with ruts and puddles from the ditch. Turn North right after the High Creek Ditch (stream) on Trail 178, called McFerran on my GPS. (The ditch is shown incorrectly on Google Maps). There is a fenced area that is a motorcycle, bicycle trailhead. It has a metal device to permit motorcycles, but blocks ATVs. You can park there. It's flat, plenty of space, with a motorcycle/atv offload ramp. Probably fine to camp there if you don't mind motorcycle noise. I saw no one there. You can use ATV on the dirt roads, but not on the claim. If the road to the motorcycle trailhead is too bad, the claim extends East with the SE Corner on Browns Pass Road (RT 658).
I walked the claim using Walter Eason's GPS coordinates. I couldn't fine a center stake. The Southwest corner had a stake with a yellow metal Mining Claim tag, but with no information on it. I found the Northwest corner stake was broken off. It had a yellow metal Mining Claim tag with no information on it. I tried to set it back up and piled some rocks around it. I didn’t look for the NE and SE stakes.
