From time to time, I am asked by local GPAA chapters how to get more people to their meetings. Well, one easy way is to go to the website of your local newspaper, radio station or TV channel and post or submit a notice to their “community calendar.” It is very easy to get free publicity since GPAA chapter meetings are open to the public and are free to attend. Here is an example of how to write one. Be sure to keep it simple, include the 5Ws (who, what, where, when and why) and follow the style shown:

The Temecula Valley Prospectors, a local chapter of Gold Prospectors Association of America, will hold its monthly meeting Saturday, April 11 at 9 a.m. at the Ronald Reagan Sports Park, CRC Building, 30875 Rancho Vista Road, in Temecula, Calif. Learn how and where to find gold using a simple gold pan, metal detector or small-scale mining equipment. The meeting is free to join and is open to the public. For more information, go to www.temeculavalleyprospectors.com or contact Chapter President Mike Mahr at (760) 473-8456, or email him at mikemahr12@gmail.com.

By the way, I would love to see more chapter outings listed in the Outings & Events listings in the Pick & Shovel Gazette and Gold Prospectors magazine. Please use the same example listed above and email me at publications@goldprospectors.org. Please put Outing & Events in the subject line. You must include the name and phone number of a contact person for more information.

What is the lead time on submissions?

Ideally, the lead time for submissions is a couple months ahead of the publication date. But, we always try to get the Outings & Events from chapters in the publications. As well, we have been trying to publish advance stories on annual events using photos from the previous year’s event. Please send Outings & Events notices to publications@goldprospectors.org.
