    Hello all,

Does anyone have an app that they recommend so I can use my phone as a handheld GPS when I'm far from any cell towers.

    Thanks

"GPS Waypoints Navigator" I have been using it for about 5 years. It is great.

Because they offer several varieties of Free Maps

    Thanks guys,

I'll look into them. The developers of the apps always say how great there's are, and you can't trust the reviews listed are legit.

    So, thanks again.

I also use GPS waypoints navigator to map claim corners and use routes to view entire claim and my location in relation to it. Good support from app.

A lot of people think you need Wi-Fi to use a phone GPS in the field.
That is not true if the app will download maps "GPS Waypoints Navigator" will do that.
In fact I recommend you turn off Wi-Fi and Data to conserve your Phone battery. If left on the phone keeps checking for a connection and will drain the battery in no time. I have a couple of old phones I use just for the GPS.
I have some 1000 plus waypoints on my phone. I mark and label everything when I am out prospecting and use the phone GPS to put me back on the exact same spot again. I mark the waypoint name with the bucket number from that spot and later put in a note what came out of that spot. I have a bush out in the desert I return to every time we have a flood. It always has a little something waiting for me.
The learning takes a little time to understand to use GPS waypoints navigator but it is well worth it.

OnXmaps.com has a phone app. It will cost about $30 or so but it really works good! A great Montana company that provides great topo maps for hunters, hikers etc...

I think GPS Waypoints Navigator is the winner.

$7.99 seems reasonable enough for something that apparently really works and does everything I think a GPS app should do and I want it to do.

I had actually downloaded Backcountry Navigator free version months ago, but couldn't get it to work, so no spending $$ on the pro version. Sorry DJ.

Maybe I'll try OnXmaps when I feel a little more flush. Haven't found much about it.

Thanks everyone, may all the dust you encounter be gold dust.

Not sure how else to get in touch with you..... I use the GPS Waypoint Navigator app, and have for years. We spend winters in Stanton propecting (detecting mostly). We joined Road Runner and I imported their claim coords. Unfortunately all their points are in one file and import to one folder. Their trails (claim boundaries) are all together as well. I always create a waypoint when we find a nugget, along with a picture. However, doing that requires me to re-populate all those corners and scroll thru over 100 trails and select the ones closest to my find.
Have you found any tricks for organizing imported data? Do you use the $ option? I have a Samsung android cell and cannot find a list of all those points in "files" so I can manage duplicates and maybe seperate the claims into their own folders. Same for the trails/boundary lines. Do I HAVE to manage the files within GPS Waypoint Navigator? How do I separate the trail files in GPSWN?
Any help would be VERY appreciated!
    Thanks, Janet
