I'm brand new to prospecting and I'm planning to spend 45-60 days this summer touring the western US tent camping and prospecting. I'd like to talk with someone who has a good deal of experience and enjoys imparting their knowledge to newbies. I have tried to get in touch with a couple people locally (in Texas) but I got the impression that my questions were so simple or obvious that I was just a burden. SO, is there anyone in this forum who would *enjoy* helping me learn. My parents bought me this GPAA membership for Christmas. I'm a veteran of OEF and it has been difficult for me to transition out of the army. Next Fall I'm hoping to get started in school and my trip this summer is meant to be therapeutic . Thanks in advance.

Hi Blake Welcome to this new journey. The best part of it all - its becomes the driving force to get out of the house, get primitive, be outside and enjoy the surroundings and meet new people. One of the best things to do if you are starting out is hit a Gold Show. There you will get to meet and speak with many people with a common interest right from the get go. And at the same time get a chance to learn more information as quick as possible. If you are able to make it to one during your travels it would be a good decision. There is one coming up on the weekend of 22st and 23rd this month in Las Vegas. If you are in the Northern Nevada area anytime during your travel this summer....I may be there at some point and you are welcome to join.

    Blake,

Welcome to the world of prospecting, it is fun, challenging, and rewarding. Myself and most members of our Chapter are Veterans, we share our own personal claims and help each other out, but we also do claim outings. Two weeks ago I was dredging on one of my own claims and found massive amounts of flood gold because we were in a flood and just happened to find a calm and safe section.

If you are going to be up in Western Colorado look me up, we can set a date and I will take you down to one of my personal claims, show you how to read the river, and then put you on a section that delivers gold.

Blake-  If you get to Oregon, I would be happy to have you join in a chapter outing.  We are going to be having campouts and potlucks on the 1st weekends in June and August at the Quartzville group of claims in west central Oregon.  We will also have a big outing over Labor Day w/e as well.  All three of the claims have gold, and there is a 10-11 mile section of public access as well.

We are located about halfway between Salem and Eugene OR, and a litle east of I-5.

    Brownsville Chapter (Mid Valley Prospectors)

Drop me a PM if you get up this way.  And a big THANK YOU for your service....we have plenty of Vets in the chapter too.

I don't normally advertise for any companies but I recently got a phone call from somebody in South Texas and he was wanting to get into prospecting. I shared a great deal of information with him but the one thing I forgot to do was to introduce him to a dealer that carries all brands of products and has helped me greatly with purchasing equipment to help us teach kids with cancer pan for gold at Camp Wapiyapi. For those that attend the gold shows you certainly know her, it's "The Gold Lady".

Her email is goldlady6@yahoo.com and her web site is www.TheGoldLadyStore.com , she has helped me with buying large amounts of pans to give away to kids with cancer, I like doing business with her, and she basically carries anything you need or can find it for you.

P.S. If you would like to come dig on one of my claims and you are new just let me know, the best time of year is late July and early August. BLM camp sites are nearby and you can camp there complete with bathroom facilities for up to 14 days for free. You will be expected to clean up behind yourself, follow the rules, fill your holes, and give a report of your activities when you leave. If you are interested join our Facebook page, it is the best way to communicate. https://www.facebook.com/groups/WCGPAA/

    Blake,

If you ever get around Eastern Washington or Northern Idaho just let me know and I'll be more than glad to show you around.
Have a lil highbanker/dredge combo and plenty of pans and hand tools.

    Blake,

I am kinda a green horn myself. My father past away a couple of years ago. I remember when he would take my brother and me out with a couple of his friends when I was a young. It was fun and I am looking forward to doing it again. Got some equipment he had. My father was Marine with PTSD. I hope it helps you getting back and in to the swing of things again. I know my dad enjoyed getting out in the foothills and mountains. If your up in the Livingston, MT area let me know and if you like through some meat on the grill. Thanks for your service and wish you the best. contact me at svrebel94@yahoo.com.

    Blake,
hi. Greenhorn here too and in central Texas. We are heading up to Llano river to try some local panning on the 13th at Longs Fish and Dig. Feel free to drop a line or stop out. Cant answer a lot of questions but I am searching for knowledge as well and always happy to share what I do know and always happy to help a vet.
