Check your pets for ticks especially if you live in Arizona.  Have never had a flea or tick problem here in the last 11 years until now.  The neighbors dogs all have ticks also, so we might have a small outbreak going on here.  Again check your pets, ticks are bad news!!!     Ron

Ronald;  This type of info is very important to ALL prospectors in the Southwest.  The same El Nino rains that you experienced have been felt all across the Southern states.  Odds are, everyone will experience an explosion of ticks.  DEET on humans, clothing, etc. will be the only way to prevent the LYME disease.  Your dogs have many more repellents available to them.  Pass the word on this infestation.

    Good work on this catch.

Regards,  SGM Gary L. "Sketer" Nichols (R)

I hate to hear of tick, flea, and chigger infestations, I for one have been covered with thousands of bites at one time or another from the invisible monsters. The problem I have always had is that you don't know that you are in a infested area until it is too late, so you giving a warning is wise.

I don't know if you can still buy sulfur from the pharmacists but as a kid anytime we were going out in a known area my parents would buy a bag a sulfur from the pharmacist, pour it into a sock, and then we would beat our feet and legs with the sock to keep them off of us, I think it worked better then DEET and could be used on our dogs as well.

Thanks for the alert.....getting to be that time of years for most things that bite or sting to be out and about.  Time for the hottails to start getting moving as well, look before you take a step or grab a hand hold.  Especially if you are reaching under a bush or detecting.  Why I only use one side of the headphones when in crawly country....I want to hear that bugger if it sounds off.

That wont work in Texas any longer, the Snakes that shake get eaten by hogs, the ones that remain silent are the ones that survive. There is a whole new generations of rattlers that don't rattle.

fighting a darn tick bite under the arm from a trip to the creek. These deer ticks (have an oil like sheen on their backs) itch forever. Every year, regardless of skin so soft, deet, OFF, Cutter or Napalm, ticks find me.

All tips for prevention, short of not going to the creek, are appreciated, lol.

Hello Folks, Yep, The ticks are out in full scale and not just in the southwest but in the southeast as well. I just removed one from my leg last night. Now I will have to monitor the bite sight for several weeks. I and a friend of mine just went to Vein Mtn. LDMA camp for a few nights this past week and my friend found 4 crawling on him. Yes, they are out in force and it's important to check yourself and clothing regularly and shower soon after being out in the wilderness especially if you have encountered any of the little blood suckers.

Permethrin is really the only stuff that works..deet is not very effective.. check the tick website which is the Univ of Rhode Island for info.. it is very infomative. you can even send the tick in for ID
It is my understanding that Lyme in the west is virtually non existent. This disease originated in Lyme County in Connecticut? we have Rocky Mtn spotted fever here, which by the way is nasty.
University of Rhode Island is full of very helpful info

We do have a problem with Lyme in the West. Permethrin works great but let your clothes dry before you put them on and do not spray on the body. Also put it on a Dog's collar and let it dry, no need for a flee collar. I works both as an repellant and an insecticide. Kills a large number of bugs and even termites.
