Dear GPAA,
My grandson, Triston, and I attended the first week of the 2010 Cripple River Expedition. To all the volunteers and to the Massie family, we thank you for the best adventure and quality time ever. Triston is 12 years old and he wrote down his top five favorite things about the camp:
- Chip’s Food: The best he ever had (I hope his mama doesn’t hear that)
- Fishing: He caught so many fish, he even caught a rock.
- Gold Prospecting: I showed him where to prospect on the beach and up the Cripple on bedrock; but, he did it himself. He dug his own material, classified and sluiced it, then panned out his own gold (he says soooo much gold to be found)
- Helicopter Ride: That was crazy fun!
- Volunteers and Participants: "They are so nice, generous and cool," he said.
We made so many great memories during the week, if I had to pick one, I would say our ATV ride to the Sinuk River. Along the way, we tracked grizzly bear footprints.
When we got to the River, we caught a big Pink Salmon, filleted it right there, made a fire, wrapped the filets in foil added a little lemon pepper, tossed them in the fire for a few minutes, and ate them right there, just he and I on the bank of the Sinuk River . My grandson says that was the best fish he ever ate. I say it was the best time, ever.
We are already getting our gear ready for next year. Hope to see you at the Camp.
To all you dads and granddads out there: My grandson flew up to Nome a boy and he came home a young man!
Thank you GPAA.
