We would like to invite you all to kickoff the official start of out 2018 Prospecting Season in Indiana with our outing at the Morgan-Monroe State Forest located at 6220 Forest Road, Martinsville, Indiana 64151. We will be meeting at the Cherry Lake Pavilion each day at 9:00 AM where we will head out to the creeks to find some gold. The Cherry Lake Pavilion is located at the end of the road the is on the south side of the forest office that is under construction. please follow the signs. We will have members that know each area be the leads for each creek to guide you through the paths that lead you back to the gold bearing creeks. If you don't have any equipment feel free to attend, we will have plenty of equipment you can borrow. The pavilion offers outhouses across the parking lot along with two fireplaces to stay warm. We will have a group permit available for anyone that wants to attend during this weekend, the State Forests do require a gold panning permit which is available by contacting the Forest Office if you want to have your own, they are good for one year from the issue date. We will be available all day at the pavilion if you can not make it at the beginning, we will have park maps available and can send you in the right direction to find the other members.
Morgan-Monroe State Forest consumes 24,000 acres of hills and glacial drifts that contain gold. The state forest does limit the types of equipment that you are permitted to use while on state owned property. You will be limited to small garden trowels, classifiers, sucker tubes, the Gold Rush Nugget Bucket, the Gold-n-Sands hand dredge or similiar hand dredge, and gold pans. I personally like the two State Forest pan only events because it gives you a chance to hone your prospecting skills and to connect with the creeks and really learn how gold flows and is deposited in the stream bed. The other reason I really enjoy these events is because of the ability to really learn how to pan for gold. All gold prospecting starts and ends with a pan so we all need to hone our skills of panning.
We will be having a short meeting at 5:00 PM on Saturday, March 17th, 2018 at the Cherry Lake Pavilion where we will have a gold nugget drawing along with other prospecting related items will be given away. We will also be having a BBQ at the meeting so please come hungry as we always have plenty of food for everyone.
